A trip to Prague

A few weeks ago, Amy Scollan, a Family Partner, along with Polly Atkins and ourselves, attended the European Circuit’s Annual Conference in Prague. The event was a fascinating blend of professional discourse and cultural immersion.

We had the chance to engage in thought-provoking discussions with legal professionals from across the continent and attend lectures on diverse topics. Amy shared her expertise by speaking about how trusts (on-shore and off-shore) can feature in English matrimonial finance cases. The English law approach was compared with that in Guernsey and the Czech Republic. It was interesting to note that the Czech Republic’s trust law is very much in its infancy.

We also took the opportunity to explore Prague's key sites, immersing themselves in the city's rich history. A significant highlight was the visit to the Prague Municipal Court, where we delved into the differences between common law and civil law systems, gaining a deep understanding of the Czech Republic's inquisitorial judicial system. We also had the honour of being hosted by the British Ambassador at his residence in Prague.

This three-day event not only broadened our legal knowledge but also provided us with an excellent platform to connect, learn, and exchange ideas with legal experts from diverse backgrounds across Europe
