Matthew Yates discusses new IHT caps and their impact on UK farmers in Solicitors Journal

Matthew’s article was published in Solicitors Journal, 18 December 2024, and can be seen here.

Matthew Yates, Partner and joint Head of our Private Client department, discusses the new inheritance tax (IHT) caps, which have raised significant concerns among farmers.

Announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the Autumn Budget, the changes will impose a £1 million limit on Agricultural Property Relief (APR) and Business Property Relief (BPR) from April 2026.

These reliefs have long been essential tools for enabling the smooth succession of family farms and rural businesses without incurring prohibitive tax liabilities.

Dubbed the “tractor tax” by the media, the proposed cap has sparked widespread alarm across the agricultural sector. Matthew highlights that many farming families could now face substantial IHT bills, potentially forcing the sale of land or assets to meet tax obligations. The policy has quickly become one of the most talked-about domestic issues of the year, drawing comparisons to other major political decisions and raising questions about the future of family farming in the UK.

Matthew warns that the cap could have far-reaching consequences for rural communities and the sustainability of traditional farming models. He calls for urgent engagement between policymakers and stakeholders to ensure that tax reforms do not undermine the long-term viability of the agricultural sector. The article underscores the need for a balanced approach that protects both government revenue and the heritage of the British countryside.
