Hunters talk to The Dura Society about navigating the law for vulnerable individuals

On Tuesday 10 February 2026, Lara Barton, Partner, and Esme Sheridan, Associate, joined Lottie Leefe, founder of The Dura Society, for a focused discussion on how best to support individuals who may be experiencing cognitive decline, financial abuse, family conflict, or a reduced ability to make independent decisions.

As individuals are living longer and personal circumstances are becoming more complex, safeguarding, mental capacity, and the protection of vulnerable and/or older people are now central to Private Client work. The conversation formed part of The Dura Society’s commitment to exploring the intersection of wellbeing, decision‑making, and long‑term planning.

Lara and Esme explored what vulnerability looks like in modern families, how mental capacity is assessed and protected, and the warning signs that may indicate undue influence, coercion or financial abuse. They also examined when legal tools such as Lasting Powers of Attorney, deputyships, discretionary trusts and disabled person’s trusts become essential safeguards, and shared practical steps to prevent disputes while maintaining client autonomy.
