Dominik Opaliński, Partner and Head of our Governance, Safeguarding and Charity department, explores the governance challenge that can confront even the most successful organisations: recognising when decisions, strategies or cultures have drifted away from their original purpose, and having the discipline to correct course. 

Drawing on examples from across the public, commercial and not-for-profit sectors, Dominik argues that good governance is not about avoiding mistakes entirely, but about creating systems that allow uncomfortable information to be surfaced, connected and acted upon. He highlights the importance of independent challenge, effective assurance processes and a culture in which concerns can be raised and heard before issues escalate into crises. 

The article also considers the growing relevance of these issues for financial services firms, particularly in light of the FCA’s new non-financial misconduct rules. Policies and procedures alone are not enough; organisations must be willing to reassess decisions, investigate concerns fairly and act when the evidence requires it. Ultimately, it is argued that the strongest organisations are those that can recognise when they have lost their way and have the governance and leadership to find their way back.
