Cordelia Smith, Associate in our Residential Property department, outlines the key aims of the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Bill 2023–24, which is currently progressing through Parliament.

The Bill seeks to improve fairness and transparency in the leasehold system, following recommendations from the Law Commission. Proposed reforms include longer lease extensions, the removal of ground rent, and making it easier for leaseholders to buy their freehold or manage their building. If passed, the Bill could significantly reshape leasehold ownership in England and Wales.
