A Trainee’s first seat at Hunters

I first experienced life at Hunters in 2022 as a participant in the vacation scheme where I had the opportunity to explore the firm’s diverse practice areas. This experience ultimately inspired me to apply for a training contract. Fast-forward just over two years, and I am now five months into my first seat, working in both the Commercial and Residential Property departments.
The work
A highlight of working in property has been the variety of work, with each transaction presenting unique challenges that make every day different. I have been entrusted with a range of responsibilities, from drafting legal documents to interacting directly with clients.
My tasks have included drafting documents such as commercial leases, licences, mortgage documents, reports on title, and replies to enquiries.
Throughout this process, attention to detail and the ability to tailor each document to the specific needs of the client and the transaction have been essential. Additionally, client interaction has also been a key part of my role, whether arranging meetings, writing attendance notes, or even attending a completion call in my very first week!
Legal research has also formed a large part of my work. For example, conducting research on a specific piece of legislation, the service of notices, or reviewing HM Land Registry procedures.
It has been rewarding to see how my work has helped my colleagues give effective advice to our clients and assist them in achieving their goals. When carrying out these tasks, I always feel reassured that my colleagues will take the time to review my work and provide constructive feedback.
Hunters as a firm
The friendly culture at Hunters has made my transition into the firm smooth and enjoyable. Whether it has been learning the firm’s management systems, solving complex legal issues for clients, or participating in various firm-wide activities, everyone works together as one team. As part of this supportive network, each first-year trainee is paired with a second-year trainee buddy, and I regularly meet with my trainee supervisor and head of department.
Whilst I am only in the initial stages of my training contract, the collaborative nature of the firm means that I have already gained insight into the work involved in other practice areas. Trainees are encouraged to participate in departmental training sessions, as well as firm-wide events. These have included a talk on the implications of pre-nuptial agreements across international borders, tax update sessions with the Private Client department, and weekly training sessions on commercial leases.
I have also had the opportunity to engage in pro bono work with the Family & Relationships department, attend training sessions hosted by the firm’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion committee, and even join in on some festive fun by singing carols with the Hunters Christmas Choir!
One of the most exciting developments during my time at Hunters has been the firm’s merger with Peachey & Co in November 2024. This moment in the firm’s long history reflects the growth and ambitions of Hunters, and it is an incredibly exciting time to be part of the firm.
Hunters has given me the opportunity to tackle new challenges and provided me with an excellent platform to grow and develop my skills. I have enjoyed my first few months, and I look forward to the next stages of the training contract.
